The 21st Century Classroom

In my 21st century classroom I would be in a 1st grade classroom. I would have different things throughout my classroom to accommodate all the children and have them in a fun and learning environment. First I would start off with having the walls a light shade of blue. I would choose blue because it is proven that children react to color and kids at ages older than five tend to work better and are less stressed and distracted with the color blue.

I would arrange my classroom the way I show above because it is accessible for all students and for the activities I would do in my classroom. I would have a square rug in the corner and have shelves and storage with different games and actives for the kids to use. We would start the day of at the rug and I would have access to my easel and other stuff to use to start the morning activities. The desks are grouped together so the kids can stay connected to one another and also work in groups, if needed. The benefit of having group tables is to keep the kids connected  specially in a differentiated classroom.  My desk would be up front so I can watch over the class and have my own personal space as well. On the other side of the room I would have a lounge area for the kids to be able to go to and read books and be comfortable to sit down on a couch or bean bag chair. Along with a table if they chose to sit and write at. The benefit of this area is if the kids want to go to a quiet area and read they can as well as be comfortable. The computers along the wall are for use to the kids during computer time. Finally I would have a kidney table set up for different one on one teacher student interaction. Also I could use this to promote differentiation in the classroom. To work with different groups with the students three or four at a time.

My class would be organized to promote ritual and routine by having the morning start on the carpet to start with the morning routine and circle time. Then the kids would know after to go to their desks and start there morning work. With it also being organized the student know exactly where things are placed and at easy access for them and everyone that enters the classroom.

The technology available in my classroom would be the computers. During station time I would give my student the opportunity to go on the computers and play educational games. Also I would have an interactive white board at the front of my classroom along with a regular white board. The IWB would be used for different activities as well as giving the students the opportunity to go and use the board. I would have a regular white board for other small activities as well. Using the interactive white board gives the students the opportunity to use the technology and all of the things it offers for the students. They are a great tool to incorporate into your classroom. Also I would incorporate the use of ipads for the students to use for reading and different learning games and activities.

In my classroom I would have made accommodations to students with exceptionalities by giving them their own space. If the student did not want to to sit in groups I would give them the opportunity to sit at a desk by themselves if they preferred so. I also would make it accessible for a student in a wheel chair the opportunity to sit at the table with their classmates by making space for their wheelchair.
I will grow as a learner and a professional by learning through my mistakes and through my students. Also learning through other teachers and by asking questions. I will make sure students are connected to other students by having class discussions and group projects for the students to work on together. I also would offer pen pals with other older students in the building or different schools around the world. The students can stay connected with community members by getting involved in the community and doing community projects. I will keep parents involved by contacting them and letting them know of anything that happens in our classroom and  keep them involved.

The following links are the places I received some of my information included above that supports what I talked about.
